If University isn’t a viable option for you why not consider our fully funded foundation degree development programme.

With this programme you can earn while you learn as it is a real alternative to the traditional University route or if you have already secured a degree but now want to specialise.  A permanent position from day one, a fantastic salary and a fully funded foundation degree, we even provide you with a new car to support with the travel during training, accommodation and expenses.  This is where we ‘grow our own’ engineers, making sure they – and we – have the right skills to look after our gas and electricity transmission networks both now, and well into the future. It’s been developed with Aston University, making sure we get the academic/practical mix just right and will lead to a foundation degree in either Electrical Power Engineering or Gas Transmission Engineering.

While you’re studying, you’ll be gaining experience on live projects, so that by the time you finish, you’ll be ready to start work on some of the biggest and most complex engineering challenges you’ll find in any industry. We have opportunities in a variety of different programmes, from planning and designing the new networks, constructing and maintaining our gas pipelines and electricity substations and overhead lines, to operating and controlling the gas and electricity in our control rooms.

National Grid’s job is to connect people to the energy they use. Society relies on having energy at its finger tips: it is built on it and National Grid owns and manages the grids to which many different energy sources are connected.  In Britain we run systems that deliver gas and electricity across the entire country.  In the North Eastern states of the US, we provide power directly to millions of customers.  Holding a vital position at the centre of the energy system, National Grid joins everything up.

There has never been a better time to join the power industry. National Grid is investing £16bn through to 2015, delivering major projects that will secure the energy supply for future generations. Beyond that, today’s new recruits will help National Grid define how they meet the considerable energy challenges in the decades to come.

At National Grid we’re passionate about our “grow our own strategy” and our suite of GCSE to degree level career path development programmes.  It’s little wonder that they are recognised for excellence and innovation – after all, we’ve been running some for well over 20 years – so they are some of the best you’ll find anywhere.

Once you complete your Foundation Degree, you will be a qualified engineer, with the specialist expertise needed to work on our extensive power systems portfolio.  Depending on your interests, you could be involved in anything from designing the route of a new overhead line cable or gas pipelines to actually going out on site and fixing a fault on a substation or gas compressor.

There is a great support network available and recruiting people from their local communities is important to us so that you are supported from home as well.  Don’t be deceived, this is an unbelievable career path for females offering the opportunity to work in teams both in an office environment and out on site at our facilities.  You’ll be spending a significant amount of your time during your training at our Nottinghamshire facility which hosts a 60 bedroom lodge.

Register your interest on-line today and apply in full from the 1st October 2012
